Type 97 KaiGunto Japanese Army Officer's Katana Sword dated1943. The blade is in generally OK condition with some rust, small chips and scuffs. The hamon (Clay Tempering) is clearly visible in a two peak style, instead of the common Sanbon Sugi or 3 ceders style found on Gunto. The nakago(Tang) is signed KaneShige, with the date "a day in 1943", and is in good original condition with no evidence of cleaning or tampering. The copper habaki (Scabbard Grip) is in great condition with almost all the gold wash still present. The tsuka ito (Handle Binding) is tight and secure with real samegawa (rayskin) present and intact. All the fittings are of good quality, unusually with a clear resin applied to those fitted to the tsuka. This is something we have not seen originally and may have been applied later. Although why this would have been done is a mystery. All of the six of the decorative seppa (spacers) are present and accounted for and original to the sword as is the tsuba(Guard). The saya is in good condition with a custom embossed leather field cover, very unusual for a Naval Officers sword.
This Kaigunto, with all its original pieces, will make a great first sword for those venturing into the world of military collecting, which will in time appreciate in value and will be enjoyed with pride for years to come.
