Most early versions of the Roman Gladius were wasp waisted with a long point that combined cutting power and stabbing ability in one handy weapon. Some of the later versions were made with a straighter blade, but still with the long point. Even later versions (like the Pompeii pattern), were not waisted and also had a shorter point, but were just as effective and easier to make.
Both swords served side-by-side for many years, and it was not uncommon to find 4th century Legionnaires carrying either models. The gladius is known as "the sword that conquered the world". This version features a high carbon blade, hard wood handle and a high polished steel spacer at the bottom of the handle for strength and durability. The sword also includes a wood scabbard wrapped in black leather with steel accents at throat and tip.
Our new and improved Mainz Gladius features a reduced handle radius for a better grip. Also, we've redesigned the handle and blade lengths for better balance and handling. Please note that the wood grains and tones will vary from sword to sword. The scabbard has also been improved with stainless accoutrements for ease of maintenance and strength, topped of with a quality sewn leather wrap.
