WWII Japanese NCO Officers sword Gunto. This particular sword is a type 1 variation which commenced production late 1938 and were produced up until April, 1941. The blade is in great condition with little to no discolouration, pitting or scratches. It still retains the cosmoline coating, most likely from the applied after capture. In fact, the blade is the best we have seen on any NCO sword we have handled. It is stamped with the indentification number of 74516 with the Tokyo First Arsenal "To" inspection stamp. The Fuchi is made of copper, and is stamped with the Iijima Swords Factory stamp, the Tokyo Arsenal Stamp and the Kokura four cannon ball identification stamp. This means that the Iijima Swords Factory made the sword (likely the blade), and was inspected (and handle assembled) by the Tokyo First Arsenal under the administration of the Kokura Arsenal. The thumb release on the aluminium tsuka still functions as it should. There is some movement in the handle to blade fit, but it is expected given the passage of time. The steel scabbard is in good condition with matching numbers to the blade and, unusual for this type of sword, a leather field cover.
Overall in very good condition for its age and a good entry in to Japanese and military arms collecting.
